Successes and Achievements
This is 'Halle Berry'
I've known her since she was born. She broke her hind leg in March 08, and I drove her to the clinic,
where the bone was set with a steel pin. Strict kennel rest was ordered, so I took her home
and two days later she decided, to have her puppies on my back yard. It was a very long day, every time I
thought she was finished, another puppy made it's way into the world, and we ended up with 10 in all!
One did not survive the first night, but all the others thrived, Halle Berry turned out to be a good mother.
They are all back with their owner in Port Royal, Halle's leg has healed beautifully and when the pin
was taken out in another operation at the clinic, I had her spayed as well.
It is very difficult to persuade the owners to have the females spayed, they all believe in the myth, that a
female dog must have one litter at least to be a happy, normal dog...
In my mind I still call this place the 'Mange Yard'.
When I started 3 years ago, this was one of the first 'yards' I was asked to come to , where all 4
dogs had mange. After consultation with my vets, I gave them the same medicine orally, that is
given as an injection at the clinics (Ivomec) and after repeated treatment, we got rid of the mange
in 3 weeks and the hair started to grow back. They are now left with 3 healthy dogs, I got the
females, Penny and Fudgy, spayed in the mean-time, one of the males got into a fight and died a
year ago. I am also happy to see that they at last have organized the yard with a proper gate, so the
dogs don't have to be tied up during the day to keep them safe.
Ever since then, I have used Ivomec rather than re-peated dips in chemicals to treat mange, as it is so
much faster and easier to administer, one can even mix it into food to throw to dogs that are
difficult to handle.
This is Alex, he lives as part of a pack by a small shack on the beach. The owner is known as 'Babyface'. This pack is ever changing, as dogs die in fights along the beach and puppies get taken by children. But Alex has been there for a while and when he started limping badly, the vet said , that the break in the shoulder could not be fixed and to wait and see, if the nerves would re-grow and allow him to lift the leg. Unfortunately this didn't happen and the foot was dragging on the ground and getting infected, despite frequent bandaging. So we decided to have the leg taken off at the clinic.
This is 'Babyface' with some of his dogs. See Alex in the middle, at least he doesn't have to suffer any
more pain. He has adjusted well to life on 3 legs and hops about quite happily.
